CLLS Learners: Getting Started
Library literacy services are for English-speaking adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Remember, these services are FREE. If you are interested in becoming an adult learner, know someone who would like to be a learner, or would just like more information, take these 3 easy steps:
Step 1 - CONTACT US.
Choose one or more of these options:
- Call 1-888-SOS-READ or 1-888-767-7323.
- Help me find the program closest to me and I will contact it myself.
- Please have a library literacy provider contact me.
Step 2 - SIT DOWN WITH US.
Once you connect with a library literacy program, you will be invited to come in for a conversation with a literacy staff member at the library literacy office nearest you. You will get an overview of the program and can see what the program has to offer. You will find out what you can expect and what’s expected of you. If for any reason this program does not meet your needs, be sure to ask for a referral to another organization that can.
Step 3 - LET THE LEARNING BEGIN!
Soon after your meeting with literacy staff, you will be called and matched with a trained volunteer tutor. The tutor will call you and together you can schedule a time and a day that is convenient for both of you. Typically tutors and learners meet once or twice a week for about an hour in a library setting.
