Why Progress Reviews?

  • Need for feedback to tutor/learner
  • Need to obtain a program picture of what goals students are pursuing, and how much they are learning in pursuit of those goals

Size of Solano County Library Jurisdiction

  • 5 cities; 6 library branches
  • serve 100-125 learners at any one time
  • primarily one-on-one, with some small groups

Time involved

  • Letter of explanation + checklist mailed to tutor
  • Staff makes appointment usually during regular tutoring time
  • Staff reviews tutor and learner files + original role/goal map to prepare
  • Progress Review meeting — takes 45 — 60 min.
  • Written report on Progress Review form
  • Total time: 2 hours per tutor/learner pair every 3-4 months

Benefits:

  • In-depth knowledge of what tutors and students are working on
  • Staff can explain EFF basics (skill wheel, levels of performance, etc.)
  • Staff can provide objective feedback to learner and tutor
  • Tutor listens as learner describes successes and challenges (and sometimes tutor learns something he/she didn’t know before)
  • Staff helps guide goal setting for next 3-4 months and can recommend materials
  • Staff can address problems e.g. not turning in monthly reports, pair that meets infrequently, tutor who is setting the learning agenda instead of learner, etc.
  • This process has been very worthwhile for our program and staff has re-ordered time priorities in order to allot the time to do regular reviews. Though not for every program, we see that the results have exceeded our expectation. And we are still fine-tuning our process.
  • Increased communication between the pairs and staff. Tutors more likely to call for suggestions, ideas, problem-solving. Promotes team approach.
