What is the Art of Changing the Brain?

Who says brain research is not ready to apply to educational practice? As professor of biology and director of a university teaching institution, Dr. James Zull uses his experience and storytelling ability in his ground-breaking book, The Art of Changing the Brain: Enriching Teaching by Exploring the Biology of Learning, to help teachers of all levels in understanding the relationship between brain functions and the learning process.

Unlike many "brain books," Dr. Zull makes no unwarranted leaps or assumptions from brain research to education, but rather his book is grounded in solid biological research and what really works in teaching and learning. Dr. Zull's book shows clear connections between the biology of the brain and what happens during the complex processes of teach and learning. His main message is that "learning is change. It is change in ourselves because it is change in the brain... Thus the art of teaching must be the art of changing the brain."

This program was recorded at the READ/San Diego's 17th Annual Tutor Conference at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, University of San Diego.
