James E. Zull
James E. Zull is a professor of biochemistry and biology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he also directs the University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education (UCITE). Dr. Zull obtained his bachelor's degree at Houghton College in New York State and his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He then conducted biochemical research for over 25 years and published more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals. In this time period he received numerous grants and lectured around the world on his research. In 1994, he became the founding director of UCITE, which is now one of the most active centers for teaching and learning in the country. Dr. Zull has studied human learning with David Kolb for nearly a decade, and in the last few years he has given workshops and lectures on the value of neuroscience for teachers at colleges and universities. Throughout his 36-year career he continued to teach and has been nominated for numerous teaching awards. In 2001, he received a "Professor of the Year" award from the Greek Life organization at Case Western Reserve. Dr. Zull has five children and two grandchildren. He lives with his wife Susan, in Cleveland Heights, and he spends his spare time working on his small farm in northeastern Ohio.
